Jeannie and her family live on a farm next to a forest. One day Jeannie hears a cry coming from the forest:"Maa, maa" Dad thinks it sounds like a baby goat calling its mother. But when Mom and Jeannie search through the woods, they find a baby deer alone.

Jeannie knows she cannot keep it, but who will take care of the fawn if its mother does not return?

Laura Godwin's simple poignant story is beautifully rendered in Stacy Schuett's rich, glowing illustrations.

From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 2AAn engaging easy reader about a young girl's encounter with an abandoned fawn. Jeannie, who lives on a farm in Canada, recounts the events of one exciting day. When she repeatedly hears a soft bleating coming from the forest beyond her family's fields, the child and her mother track the sound to a fawn who is alone in the underbrush. Readers learn, as Jeannie does, that it is not wise to approach or handle wildlife. As most young children would, the girl dreams of raising him, but her parents persuade her that it is best to take him to "a place where they care for wild animals." In the final chapter, Jeannie names the fawn Forest as a reminder of his first home. The simple story is told in an unaffected voice that allows readers to follow events without distraction. The countryside and woods are brought to life in rich green and brown hues by the illustrations that give many visual clues to the text. Nicely done and sure to appeal to animal-loving beginning readers.AMaura Bresnahan, Topsfield Town Library, MA
