Two ghosts learn that cooperation can be better than winning or losing.

PreSchool-Grade 1--A straightforward, predict able picture book. Two ghosts engage in a booing contest. The big one scares a mouse, the small one scares a dog, etc., until, together, "they booed a boo that . . . scared the moon!" There are moments when one (or both) of the characters' "boos" invite audience participation, but there is not enough humor or excitement to generate much enthusiasm. The idea that two voices are louder than one is a workable, but uninventive, attempt at conveying the message of teamwork. Beginning read ers will be able to handle the simple, repetitive text on their own, but they will also find the action too dull. Schu macher's watercolor illustrations re move all traces of spookiness. The ghosts are obviously friendly, and the light blue sky, sharp shadows, and brightly lit objects make the nighttime setting seem like day. There is nothing necessarily wrong with ghosts who are not scary (such as Robert Bright's "Georgie" Doubleday), but they should at least be interesting. Young listeners will be mildly amused at best by this unexceptional story.
