PreSchool-Grade 1-- This book lives up to its unpromising cover spread and ill-chosen title. Tommy, a young mouse, has won a cheese; readers are not told how. He shares it with his many mouse friends, and with the leftovers, they fashion a "beautiful castle," where they live, readers are to presume, happily ever after. The title suggests some sort of contest or conquest or triumph--but there's little of that within. The story limps along in prose that is often uninspired: "Tommy's friends were delighted with the heavy lumps of cheese they received." The full-color illustrations have some appeal--after all, we're dealing with mice here. And although several spreads succeed, others disappoint. Skip this, and buy extra copies of Henkes's Shelia Rae , the Brave (1987) or Julius, The Baby of the World (1990, both Greenwillow) or Lionni's "Frederick" stories or Alexander and the Wind - up Mouse (Pantheon, 1970) . The works of these two author-illustrators are rendered with far more verve, wit, and charm.
