Reviews

Kindergarten-Grade 1-A tongue-twisting look at two duckling siblings and their frog dolls Thumpit and Plunkit. "Thump and Plunk sit still and look at their toes. Then Plunk plunks Thump's Thumpit." The aggression escalates until bespectacled mother duck steps in to break up the fight and instructs Plunk, "-you may plunk Plunkit but do not plunk Thumpit. And do not plunk Thump. Ever." The story ends as mother says, "Now let's all go for a nice swim." Youngsters developing visual systems to scan may be thrown off course by the long, unusual dolls' names. The added challenge of tongue twisting provides yet another obstacle for beginning readers to overcome. While the story line is predictable, the action is difficult to track by character and sort into meaning. This title may work better as a read-aloud than as a read-alone. Lively watercolor cartoons illuminate the pages with bright, golden colors and cheerful scenes. The delightful images effectively bring the story to life.
