9780060540289: Road to Paradise

Mystery Writers of America Grandmaster Max Allan Collins brings his acclaimed and unforgettable Perdition saga to a breathtaking conclusion. Lake Tahoe, 1973. Michael Satariano, now middle-aged, is running a mob casino, his days of killing behind him. So when Godfather Sam Giancana orders him to eliminate a foe, Michael refuses. The hit goes down anyway...and Michael is left holding the bag, becoming the target for bloody retribution. To save his family, Michael agrees to testify in return for a new life in the Witness Protection Program. But nobody can save him from the mob’s wrath...and once again the son of the Angel of Death finds himself on the road, this time with his 16-year-old daughter...his life-long struggle for redemption at odds with his thirst for revenge. "A gripping, blood-soaked journey. Collins' compelling mix of history, bloodshed and retribution is irresistible. Readers will eat it up and beg for more." Publishers Weekly "Collins not only gives you a great mob novel, but a serious family drama that blows away anything The Sopranos has done." Bookgasm

From AudioFile:

This is Collins's third book about Michael Satariano, released a couple of years ago. The first two, ROAD TO PERDITION and ROAD TO PURGATORY, were dark, bloody masterpieces. Both were made into movies. Though this one is not of the same caliber, it's entertaining, as most Mafia-related books are. Michael, now a middle-aged casino manager in Reno, refuses Sam Giancana's request to kill a rival gangster. He's framed for the murder anyhow. Narrator Yuri Rasovsky is a bit off his mark. He reads too slowly, and often his voice cracks when it shouldn't. Nonetheless, his performance doesn't get in the way of the story. And his accents are wholly believable. A.L.H. From Publishers Weekly:

Shamus Award–winner Collins concludes his Road series (after Road to Purgatory) with a gripping, blood-soaked journey down memory lane. It's 1973, and 50-year-old Michael O'Sullivan Jr., the young boy orphaned in Road to Perdition, has Italianized his name to Michael Satariano and is boss and squeaky-clean mob frontman of the Cal-Neva Lodge and Casino at Lake Tahoe. Though a "made man" and official member of Chicago's Cosa Nostra family, he plans to work a few more years at Cal-Neva before retiring with his beautiful wife and teenage daughter to a life of legitimacy. But simple plans like Michael's fare poorly when thrust against the gritty realities of the mob. When Sam Giancana decides to end his exile in Mexico and reclaim his former position as Godfather, hits are ordered, mistakes are made and many people die, some of them quite close to Michael. He's now on the run, forced to relive his father's vengeance-fueled crime spree of 40 years earlier. While a slightly less profligate killer than Michael Sr., he's just as efficient and just as deadly. Collins's compelling mix of history, bloodshed and retribution is as irresistible as Sam Giancana's last meal of fried sausage, spinach and ceci beans. Readers will eat it up and beg for more. (Dec.)
