Brunsman, a priest and marriage tribunal advocate, offers a historical perspective on the attitude of the Roman Catholic Church toward the indissolubility of marriage. He outlines four viewpoints which tolerate divorce and remarriage and which are consistent with Scripture. Brunsman urges church leaders and divorced Catholics for whom annulment is not appropriate to pursue "pastoral" solutions, and he justifies this approach theologically. However, better documentation of sources would have made this volume a more useful handbook for pastors. Nevertheless, it is a helpful and "hopeful" companion to Joseph P. Zwack's Annulment (LJ 1/84). Myriel Crowley Eykamp, formerly with MIT Libs.
