9780060733018: Little Divas

Cassidy Carter has let everyone push her around long enough. Before seventh grade starts she will become independent.

Life is changing fast for Cassidy: Her parents just got divorced and she's moved in with her dad. Even things between her and her strong-willed cousin and constant best friend, Rikki, are different. All Rikki seems to care about are boys and how to sneak past her preacher father to meet up with them. When a new girl, Golden, moves in next door, Cassidy sees a chance to make a change. With help from her two friends she will learn to test her own limits and summon her inner diva—because sometimes having a little attitude and respect for yourself is the only way to get what you want.

About the Author:

A native of Toledo, Ohio, Philana Marie Boles has a BFA in creative writing and theater from Bowling Green State University. Prior to the release of her debut novel, Blame It on Eve, she lived in New York City, where she worked in the development office of Spike Lee's 40 Acres & A Mule Filmworks and then as an assistant to the director of media relations at Glamour magazine. Besides the blessing of being both a writer and spokenword artist, her favorite gig has been working as a substitute teacher, mentoring youth along the way. Her middle-aged novel will be released in the fall.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 5-7–Life is changing at a rapid pace for Cassidy Carter. Her parents have recently divorced, her mother is teaching in Ghana for a year, and the 12-year-old is living with her musician father. Even her relationship with her cousin and best friend, Rikki, isn't the same. And, Cassidy's new next-door neighbor makes the familiar twosome into a sometimes-awkward threesome. At least, Cassidy thinks, she will be going to King Junior High with everyone she knew in elementary school. Then she hears that she might be attending exclusive Clara Ellis Academy instead. The three girls are invited to an end-of-summer pool party that they don't tell their parents about and Cassidy discovers that the boys she knew (and disliked) in sixth grade have somehow changed over the summer, too. Boles portrays this variable age well, and readers will feel for Cassidy's trials. The night before school starts the girls are eating Godiva (go-diva) chocolate and decide that a diva who is clever, cool, stylish, not stuck-up, and respects herself is something to emulate. This book will be enjoyed by fans of Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's Alice series (S & S) and Lois Lowry's Anastasia Krupnik (Dell, 1984).–Terrie Dorio, Santa Monica Public Library, CA
