Penni Russon's first novel, Undine, was named a Notable Book of the Year by the Children's Book Council of Australia. Ms. Russon grew up in a bush suburb of Hobart, where there was snow in winter and bushfires in summer. She now lives in Melbourne with her young family, and every winter she dreams of snow.
From the start, the listener is immersed in the world of young Undine, an Australian girl who begins to hear voices, discover strange gifts on her front step, and subsequently wonder who and where her father is. This entire production conveys an enchanting sense of mood, and watery nautical interludes introduce the tale and its chapters. Giving authenticity to this Australian story with her native accent, Melissa Eccleston is a joy to listen to. Listeners may have occasional difficulty distinguishing her male voices from one another, but its not enough to distract from this mysterious, exciting, and sometimes ominous story of how the decisions of our parents can change our world.
