The narrator of this unassuming and uncompelling novel is a writer who lives quietly and serenely in the Maine countryside. His complacency is interrupted by the visit of two close friends. One is a renowned composer who has forsaken that career for music therapy work among retarded children; the other is a poet and political activist accompanied by Luisa Domic, a Chilean refugee seeking political asylum in Canada. If Dennison intended this to be a novel about human aspiration and fulfillment and their annihilation through political repression, he has succeded in some measure in communicating his message. But, although the narrative style is neat and clear, the emotional tone is gushy and overly ``sensitive,'' and the dialogue often extraneous or maudlin. For large collections.
