Synopsis

Anyone who has spent any time messing around with boats and wooden boats in particular knows that those cunning curves, endless seams, and rotting wood hold more than practical challenges. All boats have histories, some more poignant than others, and few narratives of the past few decades have captured the mystique of a boat's provenance (in this case Chris Craft) or more touchingly depicted the ties that boats often create between father and son than this classic by Joe Soucheray.

From Publishers Weekly

Not just for boating enthusiasts, this account of a two-year struggle to resurrect a 50-year-old Chris Craft motorboat, Miss Emily , and turn it into a trophy winner at a boat show is a story of and for fathers and sons. St. Paul Pioneer Press Dispatch columnist Soucheray depicts his father as a loving man reluctant to show his emotions, yet captivated by motorboats, which he moored and piloted on various Minnesota lakes; he communicated this enthusiasm to his son, and boats became the link that bound them. When the author had the rare good fortune to recover one of his father's old boats (it was too rotted to be repaired), he was able to strip off its hardware and use this in the boat he was refinishing, thus strengthening the filial/paternal bond. Happily, the dying father lived long enough to witness his son's triumphant handiwork.

From Library Journal

Appropriately titled, this book describes the trials and tribulations involved with restoring a wooden, 1938 17-foot Chris Craft utility boat. Yet, reminiscent of modern-day ships, of which there is as much if not more below the waterline than above, the book also tells of a son struggling to maintain a relationship with his father and boats. Soucheray, a journalist with the St. Paul Pioneer Press Dispatch , has written a book that, while not a necessary purchase, displays humor and an eye for detail that will appeal to small-boat enthusiasts (especially the all-thumbs variety!) and those trying to re-establish the all-important father-son relationship. For public library collections.
