Conventional guidebooks serve first-time tourists well because they focus on capital cities and major attractions. But after hitting the high points, serious travelers may seek less well-known destinations. The Blue Guides and Baedekers are fairly thorough in their coverage of whole countries, but most guidebooks are not. This new series, British in origin, emphasizes the kind of places tourists might go on their second or third visit to a country. Imagine a guidebook to Italy that hardly mentions Rome or Venice! Also omitted is the standard introductory matter such as visas, travel from the United States, health precautions, and specific lodging and other information. The strength here is the descriptions of areas reached primarily by independent auto travelers. The chapters are written by various authors who know their areas well. Included are addresses of local tourist offices, lesser known museums, and festival days. The maps are helpful (but do not substitute for good road maps such as those published by Michelin) and the photographs are well chosen to show the typical rather than the spectacular. This series is less political and opinionated than another new series, " The Real Guides " (e.g., Martin Dunford and Jack Holland's The Real Guide to Amsterdam, LJ 41/89), and is suitable for larger travel collections serving fairly sophisticated and discriminating travelers. Other titles include West Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.
