Confessions of a Mail Order Bride tells the true story of a beautiful, intelligent, twenty-one year old young woman from Thailand, whose brother is murdered for political reasons. To get her out of Thailand, her father arranges with a marriage broker for her to wed an American professor.

Larsen's lively narrative of her life in America reads like the Cinderella romance that it ultimately is. When her existence in Thailand is abruptly shattered by the murder of her brother, Wanwadee decides to utilize the services of an Asian mail-order bride agency in the hopes of pursuing a college education in America. Fortunately, the man she marries is sympathetic, and her memoirs record her growing relationship with him and her attempts to come to terms with her adopted home. Although Wanwadee is appealing, her cultural generalizations often appear too pat. Also, although she protests that Asian American women are more than "kitchen appliances with sex organs," she fails to connect the Asian mail-order bride business with perpetuating this image. Recommended for growing Asian American collections or those wishing to learn more about our newest immigrants.
