In search of prestige as well as profits, a rapacious American conglomerate sends one of its rising stars, a 34 year old corporate raider, to Bordeaux to find, buy and run a "suitable" chateau. It doesn't matter which one, as long as it's famous, and it doesn't matter who he drives out or hurts. But he comes up against traditions he doesn't understand, is thwarted by the weather, by a major wine fraud, and by the chateau owner's strong willed daughter.

The best thing when writing about wine is that you get invited into the houses, and some of the Bordeaux chateaus are quite magnificent. Margaux with its alley of trees. Lafite with its elegant museum. LaGaffeliere with its old, old paintings. Yquem with its turrets. One year we lived for a week in the Chateau Haut Brion. These people are professional hosts, the dinners are sumptuous, and the wines sometimes extremely rare. At Chateau Angludet Peter Sichel once served us an 1876 Lafite. It is very hard, if you spend time in Bordeaux, not to fall in love with the city, with the vineyards, and with the wine.About the Author:
