The night is here, but the dark is coming. . . .
Deep in the underworld lies the kingdom of Nebula. Although it is always everlasting night there, Nebula is never dark because all of its people, buildings, and creatures glow with an inner light source protected by the Lightkeepers. But true darkness—the kind that is malicious and blinding—lurks just beyond the kingdom’s gates.
There, the deadly Warriors of the Black Shroud are on the move, destroying and engulfing every outpost with their relentless evil and black despair. And this time, they have a weapon deadlier than anyone has ever encountered before.
Only a Chosen One, someone with the mark of the king, can help save Nebula from destruction. Astonishingly, that Chosen One is discovered in the Outerworld far above Nebula. But he is the unlikeliest of heroes, living in a dark of his own making. Can he accept who he is and lead the forces of the Light against the Warriors of the Black Shroud?
Peter Howe delivers a riveting, high-action fantasy about battling evil and discovering and believing in the power within.

Peter Howe delivers a riveting, high-action fantasy about battling evil and discovering and believing in the power within.
Slapping together an assortment of well-worn devices and character types from the fantasist’s toolkit, Howe transports a bookish 11-year-old lad from this world to save the glowing land of Nebula, which is surrounded and threatened by the evil Black Count and his Diabolonian army. Repeatedly accosted by Eddie, an insistent emissary sporting a fedora, a Red Sox jacket, and a magic sword, Walker reluctantly comes to accept that the star-shaped birthmark on his cheek means that he has been designated as a Chosen One destined to be king. Walker hardly has time for a quick tour of Nebula, though, before he and his aggressively extroverted new friend, Frankie, are swept into a desperate mission to search sunless, desolate Diabolonia for allies and then call on the local unicorns, dragons, and other animals to do battle with the blind but powerful invaders. Genre fans will be unsurprised to discover that all ends well—or at least well enough for an opening episode; the Black Count’s escape paves the way for sequels. Grades 4-7. --John Peters
