9780062127778: Untangling the Mind: Why We Behave the Way We Do

Free yourself from emotional turmoileven when that turmoil is caused by others!

We have a much greater understanding of human behavior now than we did just a few decades ago. Yet even with this greater understanding of the human mind, why we do what we do can sometimes seem like a mystery. People are often left with unsettling questions about their own (or others') behavior.

We ask ourselves, Why did I make a spectacle of myself? Why am I so stressed? Why am I constantly so negative?

In his years as a clinician, Dr. Ted George has been struck by how much easier it is for people to say they have a physical illness than it is to admit they feel out of control with an emotion—be it anger, fear, or depression. With a physical issue, you have the source of the problem in concrete terms, such as in a lab report, but with an emotional issue, it can be much harder to define what's gone wrong. Untangling the Mind helps make sense of what's happening—and why. With knowledge of how the brain translates sensory signals into emotions, you will increase your understanding of your own—and others'—behaviors. As you learn about your psychological and neurological makeup, you will begin to see new possibilities for optimism, motivation, and well-being.

We can control our behavior and our feelings, no matter how much they may have ruled us in the past, and Dr. George helps us know how. Once you understand the deeply rooted instincts that activate your emotions, you can live more peacefully, behave in ways that are more in keeping with the person you'd like to be, and enjoy your life more fully. And you'll be better able to remain unaffected by the drama of other people's emotional storms.

Product Description:

Don't let emotions—your own, or someone else's—control your life!

Feeling extreme emotion is part of being human. We may feel overwhelming joy at the birth of a child, crippling terror at the sight of an intruder in our home, or unbearable sadness upon the death of a loved one. While we may be surprised at the force of our feelings, they are normal and are not a cause for concern. What's concerning is when strong emotions cause us to spin out of control and make us behave in ways we later wish we hadn't.

In Untangling the Mind, Dr. George explains how to:

  • Identify the difference between a legitimate emotional reaction and a pathological one
  • Understand the biological basis of your hard-wired reactions
  • Recognize why your distress is caused by a neurological malfunction

Dr. George, a psychiatrist, has accessed the most cutting-edge technology, such as fMRI, facial analysis, PET scans, and chemical infusions. With this technology, he is able to provide a deep understanding of the inner workings of the brain that can portray a clear picture of what happens—chemically and physically—when we get depressed, act out, or fall into an addiction. Once we understand what happens, we can start to live a calmer, more harmonious life.

Book Description HarperOne, 2014. Book Condition: New. Brand New, Unread Copy in Perfect Condition. A+ Customer Service! Summary: We all have moments when we are surprised by the intensity of our feelings. In Untangling the Mind , psychiatrist Ted George, M.D. uses cutting-edge brain science to explain the neurological basis for strong emotions, and how we can keep them from negatively impacting--or even controlling--our lives. Includes eight black and white illustrations. For the past twenty five years Ted George, a psychiatrist and an associate clinical director at the NIH, has been on the front lines of clinical trials studying patients who exhibit the most extreme forms of behavior (as well as running his own private practice). These troubled people are addicts, abusers, PTSD victims, and the severely depressed, and they express themselves in one of three basic human responses-fight, flight, or shut down. But the fact is that even those of us who do not suffer from any severe psychological challenges also respond in the same way. And in Untangling the Mind, Dr. George explains why the fight, flight, or shut down response is sometimes appropriate. The key, he explains, is not to try to quell your extreme feelings, but to learn how to integrate them into your emotional landscape in a healthy and helpful way. Dr. George has combined the most cutting edge methods of medical research--fMRI, facial analysis, pet scans, and lactate infusion--to present a model of the brain that has never before been made public. Most compellingly, he explains, based on neuroscience, exactly what happens in the brain when we "lose it," even when we are mentally well. Dr. George's research and studies have led him through the bundles of neurons in the brain, and he has arrived at a region deep in the cerebellum. He believes that it is the relay station for directing irrational feelings and behavior and that it has much to teach us. This relay station--or switching box, so to speak--is a tiny structure called the periaqueductal gray (PAG). When someone is constantly angry, fearful, or emotionally battered, his or her PAG, along with other areas of the brain, are in a ceaseless feedback loop, firing an endless cycle of intense feelings that can cause behavior that is disturbing to others-and to ourselves. But with Dr. George's guidance, we can weather these storms of strong emotion. This book is a practical guide to releasing ourselves of extreme emotion, exhibiting more reasonable behavior, and achieving a more manageable, peaceful life.
