9780062338037: The Sun and the Moon (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 1)

The sun is out in the day and always has a circle shape. The moon’s shape seems to change and you can sometimes see it in the daytime and at night. What are the sun and the moon? How are they the same and how do they differ? Hop into your spaceship and find out!

With beautiful illustrations and engaging text, The Sun and the Moon will guide young readers into a deeper understanding of their observations of the sun and the moon. Featuring a find-out-more section with instructions on how to keep an observation log and how to make moon ice, a glossary of new terms, and web research prompts, this book will begin children’s explorations of the sun and the moon. Both the text and the artwork were vetted for accuracy by Bradley J. Thomson, Ph.D., Senior Research Scientist at the Boston University Center for Remote Sensing.

This is a Level 1 Let’s-Read-and-Find-Out, which means the book explores introductory concepts perfect for children in the primary grades and supports the Common Core Learning Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) standards. Let’s-Read-and-Find-Out Science is the winner of the American Association for the Advancement of Science/Subaru Science Books & Films Prize for Outstanding Science Series.

From the Author:

When I told teachers at the National Science Teachers Association convention that I had just embarked on this book project, one teacher called out a specific request: Would I please, PLEASE explicitly make it clear that the Moon is sometimes out during the day? I was thrilled to hear this request, as I had already decided this was a must - but I wanted to do much, much more!       In this book, I invite young readers to take an imaginary trip to visit the Sun and the Moon. It is my hope that they will embrace this opportunity to be first-hand observers and emerging scientists who compare and contrast these two bodies for themselves. I wanted to convey a spirit of enthusiastic adventure and fun while providing interesting, age-appropriate information, and a few surprising details. I also wanted to create a science book that is truly fun to read aloud (especially for adults who love a good snuggle while they read to young children in their lives).      After the book was released, I realized I could extend this journey through my author visits. I provide passports with a check list of activities related to learning more about the Sun and the Moon, and I invite children to make post cards about the visit. Sometimes, I even provide the stamps so that the cards can be sent right away to lucky friends and grandparents.       I hope readers of all ages enjoy their trip through The Sun and the Moon!
