A unique chronology of culture in human history--from the Magdalenian cave paintings to Madonna. From Booklist:
This chronology includes areas such as painting, fiction, classical and popular music, film, theater, television, sculpture, belles lettres, photography, dance, and architecture. It ranges from prehistory (100,000-5000 B.C.) through 1992. From 1500 A.D. on, information is presented year by year. Coverage is international, with good coverage of Asia and the Middle East.
The basic arrangement of the entries is by date under six main categories: "Literature," "Visual Arts," "Theater and Variety," "Music and Dance," "Film and Broadcasting" (in later years), and "World Events." Entries are concentrated in literature, with approximately equal space provided for the other categories. There are approximately 20,000 entries, running to 50 words at most, with most entries only a brief phrase. For example, entries for Alessandro Manzoni are found on three pages: the first notes the publication of a book of poems; the second the publication of his most significant novel, I Promessi Sposi, and the third his death.
A 56-page index helps in locating an entry when the searcher does not know the date. The index is by personal name only; subjects or minor disciplines in the arts do not appear.
Because it focuses only on arts and literature in an international context, Timelines is unique in its field. Unfortunately, the lack of a subject index limits the locating of events or places. Wonderful for browsing, this source will find users in both the reference and circulating collections. Recommended for libraries wanting a chronology specifically on the arts.
