A mysterious vault in which the dead cannot rest . . . a haunting song that drives those who listen to it to take their lives . . . a curse as ancient as the tombs of Egypt. These stories and 11 more will disturb and delight middle-grade horror fans, who will find them all the more hair-raising . . . because they are true!

Gr. 4-6. Libraries that have a hard time keeping scary books on the shelves may want to consider this original paperback. The book begins with the dramatic statement: "Everything in this book really happened . . . [the events] have all been reported by reliable witnesses." Well, maybe, but there are no source notes of the kind that distinguish Alvin Schwartz' popular series. Nevertheless, the 14 stories are capably told and culled from over two centuries and across many different lands. Some are unfamiliar, for example, the one about an aggressively haunted crypt in colonial Barbados. Others feature real people such as Harry Houdini. There are a handful of eerie black-and-white illustrations, but even more would have been nice. Julie Corsaro
