PreSchool-Grade 2-An attractive alphabet book showcasing endangered animals from around the globe. A-Z entries include upper- and lowercase letters and a large, eye-catching portrait. For each creature, common species, scientific name, and natural habitat are listed. No other information is provided. Although the main focus is mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects are also represented. Children may be familiar with some of these creatures (Asian elephant, mountain gorilla, snow leopard), but others are not as commonly known (numbat, quoll, uakari). The brightly colored collage illustrations, constructed out of tissue paper with touches of paint and crayon, beautifully capture the texture of fur, scales, or feathers. The letter "X" stands for "eXtinct" and depicts animals that have already disappeared. Here, the colors are bland and the figures shadowy, effectively creating the ancient look of a cave painting. Although nicely presented, this book barely scratches the surface of the subject. Supplement it with Roger Few's Macmillan Children's Guide to Endangered Animals (Macmillan, 1993).
