From School Library Journal:

Grade 7 Up-- A young man, one of 13 siblings, adjusts to having a room of his own; a boy stops mourning the end of a romance and takes hold of his future; a proud girl sacrifices victory in the school race to push a classmate in a wheelchair. In each of these nine stories, a teen confronts an ordinary situation which has taken on an extraordinary dimension, and grows from it. A skillful craftsman, Sieruta reveals characters through informal dialogue or interior monologue. Powerful images stand out; one boy wears a pair of red women's boots (in "Three O'Clock Midnight"), and the boots become a symbol of independence. Only one entry suffers from contrivance, as "25 Good Reasons for Hating My Brother Todd" counterpoints Todd's callous theft of his younger brother's love interest. Otherwise, these stories reveal poignant moments of self-recognition with the ring of truth. Heartbeats will have the same general appeal as Mazer's Summer Girls, Love Boys (Delacorte, 1982), but for a slightly more sophisticated readership. Many readers will find themselves in these thoughtful contemporary stories. --Carolyn Noah, Worcester Public Library, Mass.

From Publishers Weekly:

Assuming as many different voices as there are chapters in this collection, Sieruta proves himself an able student of the short story form. Whether he is writing as the bemused younger brother in "25 Good Reasons for Hating My Brother Todd," or as the street-wise boy proving himself on his first job in "Walking," the author has an uncanny ear for the undercurrents that are part of everyday conversation. "The Attack of the Jolly Green Giant" depicts a wise guy's first glimpse of his own insensitivity; it's a satisfying moment that is neither a soul-searching strain on credibility nor a glib turnaround, and gains power in the minutiae of the insight gained. High school life, and all the players, are represented in these tales, and some, such as "Walking," will whet readers' appetites and make them hope that Sieruta's next work is an expansion of any of the small universes in this first book. Ages 12-up.
