David Jary, BSc (Econ.) is Visiting Professor, Department of Cultural Studies and Sociology, University of Birmingham. Before moving to Birmingham, he was Professor of Sociology and Dean of the School of Social Sciences at Staffordshire University. Previously he was Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Salford, and before that he was subject leader in Sociology at Manchester Polytechnic. His previously edited works include The Middle Class n Politics (with J. Garrard, M. Goldsmith and A. Oldfield), Sport, Leisure and Social Relations (with J. Home and A. Tomlinson), Giddens' Theory of Structuration (with C. Bryant), and most recently Anthony Giddens: Critical Assessments (4 vols) with C. Bryant. From Library Journal:
As the editors indicate, the field of sociology "overlaps with all other social sciences, and as the general science of society, must take into account these other disciplines." Therefore, compiling a sociology dictionary is quite a challenge. The criteria for inclusion in this source include 1) major terms/topics, 2) other widely used, relevant terms, 3) major theorists, 4) research and statistical terms, and 5) "common language" terms likely to present problems for students. Prepared by a team of British sociologists, this is not designed to be the comprehensive, definitive reference on the subject. (For this level of thoroughness, see the new Macmillan Encyclopedia of Sociology , Macmillan, 1991.) This work's "main aim is to serve as a study aid," and it serves this purpose well. More than 1800 entries, many "new" to the field, are included, each with a basic definition, with additional explanation and examples for most. Part of the "HarperCollins Dictionary" series, which now numbers a dozen different titles, this user-friendly source is extensively cross-referenced and has a large bibliography. However, a subject and theorists index would have helped. This is recommended for larger public libraries. Academic libraries will want the Macmillan Encyclopedia. -- Dale Farris, Groves, Tex.
