Henry Boylan has had a distinguished career as a public servant and man of letters. In all, he has devoted over twenty-five years' work to the 'Dictionary of Irish Biography'.From Library Journal:
This helps confirm Oscar Wilde's contention that Irish geniuses are "plentiful as blackberries." The 1300 entries, ranging from poets to playwrights, politicians, and priests, expand (by 200 more entries), update, and correct the 1978 edition. Those who were Irish, "or made a considerable contribution to Irish affairs," are included, with emphasis on l9th- and 20th-century persons. Narratives range from a few sentences devoted to minor figures up to the eight columns for former Irish President Eamon de Valera. A quotation to provide "flavor" may accompany the important chronological facts. Sources are not documented, although there is a lengthy bibliography. Cross references and bold print for names aid the user. Although overlap with the Dictionary of National Biography and older Irish biographies is inevitable, this is recommended for academic and public libraries.
