Pamela Duncan Edwards has wowed audiences with a wealth of winning tales. Her children's books include Roar, Livingstone Mouse, Some Smug Slug, Barefoot, and Four Famished Foxes and Fosdyke. She lives in Virginia. From Booklist:
Ages 3-6. After the sun goes down, animal parents wake their babies and speak to them, often prodding them to venture out into the night. Cole's sensitive drawings, which appear to be pastels on dark-toned paper, create a sequence of most appealing night scenes. Each double-page spread shows another animal family in a moonlit picture, accompanied by a rhyming couplet, such as "'Stretch those wings! Chitter! Chitter!'/ Cries Flying Squirrel to her litter." And "In overcoats striped white and black. / Little skunks wait for their twilight snack." Despite all this talk of waking, there's something soothingly soporific about the rhythmic couplets and the dark, cozy scenes of animal families. A good bedtime book for reading aloud any time.
