Written for those either using or managing data communications systems and networks, this book explains all facets of not only the Transmission Control Protcol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), but also the many protocols that operate within these two standards. Coverage in this book includes gateway protocols GGP, EGP, Hello, RIP and OSPF, naming and addressing conventions and the Domain Name System, migration issues, TCP/IP and operating environments, networks, bridges, gateways, and routers.

Review:
The ever-improving tools available to network engineers have helped hide the details of the TCP/IP protocol suite to some degree, but real gurus know that you have to understand the protocols at a low level to really see what's going on. TCP/IP: Architecture, Protocols, and Implementation with IPv6 and IP Security shows how, under the TCP/IP protocols, digital signals are assembled into packets and routed among network nodes.

To communicate this information, the author uses lots of block diagrams and bit listings. He also patiently walks through transactions, explaining how nodes communicate back and forth to establish connections. The miscellaneous elements of the TCP/IP stack--including Bootstrap Protocol (BOOTP), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), the Domain Name System (DNS), the mail protocols, and various others--get plenty of attention too (something that's welcome, as they're not well covered in most TCP/IP books).

This second edition includes bits of information on both IP version 6 (IPv6) and IP Secure (IPsec), but neither is discussed in much depth. If you want to read more about IPv6, check out IPv6: The Next Generation Internet Protocol. If security (perhaps for a virtual private network) interests you, IPsec has all the detail you could want about the IPsec improvements to the Internet protocol stack. --David Wall

Topics covered: The design and operational behavior of the data-communications protocols that underlie modern internetworking: The Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) suite. In explaining how TCP/IP works, the author explains the Domain Name System (DNS) and algorithms for routing data between IP addresses. New coverage details IP version 6 (IPv6) and the IP Secure (IPsec) standards.

From the Back Cover:
A greatly expanded update of the best-selling TCP/IP guide, now including Web applications, the new IP security framework, and IPng--the new Internet Protocol. The Second Edition of this popular reference has been completely updated, and expanded to provide you with the best available guidance on planning for, configuring, using, operating, and maintaining a TCP/IP network and associated services. Written in an engaging, problem-solving style, the new edition includes several Internet protocols used with World Wide Web servers and browsers. It covers all major changes in the field, including the new IP security standards and The Next Generation Internet Protocol--better known as IPng or IPv6. This extensively illustrated book will help you determine what impact IP security and IPng will have on your existing network environment--and what you must do to coexist or migrate smoothly to the new technology. This state-of-the-art resource also features: Three new chapters on IP security and IPv6; Coverage of the World Wide Web, Internet news, and gopher client/server applications; Details on Domain Name Servers, Subnet Mask problems, and Classless Internet routing; Greatly expanded information on routing tables and routing protocols; Guidelines on security issues for each protocol and application; Sample dialogues that feature new GUIs; A new chapter on automatic configuration. Whether you're a network manager, designer, or administrator, the new edition of this well-known productivity tool will show you how to dramatically improve your networking capabilties.
