9780070156609: Microbiology: 49 Science Fair Projects

The experiments in this book demonstrate the importance of bacteria and other micro-organisms such as moulds, yeasts, protozoa and algae. Experiments explore the role that micro-organisms play in the environment and in the cause and cure of disease, and how they are controlled by chemical and physical factors. The experiments follow the methodology dictated by science fair competitions. Topics covered include history and tools of microbiology, genetics and mutations, antibiotics and micro-organisms, microbiology of soil, water, air and sewage, and microbiology from your skin to your back garden. The text begins with a thorough overview of the scientific method and the science fair. Each experiment contains an introduction explaining the background and application of the topic.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 6-9-A useful, well-presented addition to any science-fair collection. Dashefsky emphasizes that it is necessary to have an adult who is knowledgeable about lab procedures and disposal techniques on hand for all of these projects and offers some safety measures. An introduction explains how each activity is organized and gives students the basics of the use and design of microscopes, care and handling of equipment, and how to prepare slides. Each project has a list of needed materials, clearly written instructions, conclusions, and suggestions for further experimentation. Simple black-and-white drawings further clarify the directions, and a list of biological supply houses is included. Icons in the margins indicate when extra caution is required. Janice Van Cleave's Microscopes and Magnifying Lenses (Wiley, 1993) would make a good introduction for beginners or somewhat younger students. A commendable learning experience.
