The work at hand ``attempts to teach a strategy for reading and enjoying some of the classics of western literature.'' The typical format includes a bio-bibliographical essay on a major author (or work), followed by several essay questions with answers. The introductory essays are well written and informative; the essay questions with answers represent mainstream literary themes and problems, sometimes suggesting additional questions for the reader to investigate. A nicely done manual, useful to those studying the classics on their own and especially well suited as a companion to world literature courses. Charles E. Perry, Central Coll. Lib., Pella, Iowa
