From Preface. This book might have been subtitles "Accounting for Non-accountants". For every professional accountant, there are dozens of other persons in industry and government who need to understand the basic concepts of accounting in order to do their jobs properly. In fact, in our modern industrial age of high taxation and of numerous laws that are related to accounting figures, on might almost say that an elementary knowledge of accounting should be viewed as a prerequisite for good citizenship. The objective of this book is to provide a fundamental knowledge of accounting for persons who do not expect to become accountants but need to understand the basic account ting concepts and to gain some insight into the structure and the operating characteristics of accounting systems. These matters are important to persons who must interpret various accounting reports or to make use of data available in the accounting records.
