9780070363052: Sentence skills: A workbook for writers

Written for courses in basic writing, Sentence Skills, Fifth Edition, Form B, is the alternate version of the Fifth Edition, Form A, which is known for its especially effective instruction on grammar, mechanics, punctuation, and usage rules needed for clear writing. Clear, readable explanations and an abundance of practice and editing and proofreading tests characterize Sentence Skills. With the Fifth Edition comes a convenient Instructor's Edition, as well as refinements to the worktext-with expanded practice in writing simple paragraphs and essays in Part Four, "Writing Assignments." The alternate forms provide different exercises and examples, but offer the same basic instruction. Thus, if instructors want to use different books from one semester to the next, or from one class to the next, they can do so with full ease, as minimal syllabus adjustment is required.

Product Description:

This highly regarded text/workbook for the Developmental English course is now available in a Canadian edition. Langan's proven approach of clear explanations and abundant exercises will help students learn, apply, and then master the basic rules of grammar, mechanics, punctuation, and usage. An underlying assumption to the book is that basic writing skills should be as thorough as possible, so it looks at some skills, such as dictionary use and spelling improvement, not often found in other texts.

The text comes with a comprehensive Instructor's Manual. Diagnostic and achievement tests are provided, appearing in Appendix A of the book.

About the Author:

John Langan has taught reading and writing at Atlantic Community College near Atlantic City, New Jersey, for over twenty years. The author of a popular series of college textbooks on both subjects, he enjoys the challenge of developing materials that teach skills in an especially clear and lively way. Before teaching, he earned advanced degrees in writing at Rutgers University and in reading at Glassboro State College. He also spent a year writing fiction.

Sharon Winstanley, author and co-author of numerous textbooks, teaches at Seneca College and York University. She received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Toronto, and then enjoyed a first career in retail and marketing management. After returning sporadically to university to study Italian, Greek, Marketing, and Financial Management, she decided on a career-change. Twenty-odd years of teaching later, she’s still happy about that change.

For over two decades, Sharon has created and taught courses in writing, film, design and layout, and elective courses ranging from studies in horror fiction to twentieth-century popular music. Preferring the classroom to administration, she still enjoys what first appealed to her about teaching—her students.
