John Langan has taught reading and writing at Atlantic Community College near Atlantic City, New Jersey, for over twenty years. Sharon Winstanley has been creating and teaching courses on writing, film, cultural studies, webpage design, and music at Seneca College for over fifteen years. As co-author of a popular series of college textbooks on writing, she enjoys working with students to decomplicate the process of communicating. In particular, she enjoys helping students to interpret and analyze their everyday cultural environment. Sharon received undergraduate and post-graduate degrees in English Literature from the University of Toronto, and she later returned to study corporate finance as well as Greek and Italian. After working as a film reviewer, travelling and living in the U.K. and Europe, she worked in retail and marketing management and then founded her own importing company. Her business career involved numerous day-to-day challenges, including writing “everything from advertising copy to radio/TV scripts to shipping instructions.”This experience with the practical, purposeful aspects of writing and communication led Sharon to a satisfying career change—teaching. Today, Sharon combines the pleasure of sharing a career’s worth of lessons in writing with research and teaching what she enjoys most—movies and Rock music.
