In Part 1, you learned the alphabet of Gregg Shorthand as well as brief forms, word beginnings, word endings, and phrases. You now have at your command the tools for writing any word in shorthand. Welcome to the world of Gregg writers! Part 1 was devoted to the basics of shorthand and of English, because those basics are extremely important. Part 2 will continue to stress the basics, but it will also include some other things that will enhance your study of shorthand. You will learn about a variety of ways that shorthand can be used personally and professionally. Some of the exercises you write in shorthand will illustrate those used. You will also learn a little about word processing and the electronic office. (There's a word processing glossary at the back of this book) You will learn about three commonly used letter styles, and you will prepare your typewritten transcripts following these styles. As a shorthand writer, you are already aware of the importance of listening-if you don't listen you will miss out on the dictation. But listening is an important pare of communication even when you are not taking dictation. Part 2 will describe way in which you can become a better listener-and a better communicator. Part 2 will not only be devoted to increasing your dictation speed; it will also help you develop good transcription skills and increase your transcription speed. Just as you take timings in your typing class, you will take timings in your shorthand class-the only difference is that the words are written in shorthand. What a challenge! As you progress through the program, you will discover that it becomes easier and easier to do the transcription exercises, and you will see your speed increase.
