Gr. 5^-9. The typeface is small, and the illustrations are not always adequate--it's hard to show poisonous snakes in black-and-white sketches. Even so, this will be great for young hikers and campers who want to feel more independent. Brief sections cover everything from road warrior's cuisine, fireside games, and orienteering to selecting sleeping bags, tents, and footgear. There are even some projects for backyard campers--making plaster casts of animal prints, for example--and tips for canoers. Because of the accessible, manageable text, the book will be a good forerunner to the detailed camping books written for adults; in fact, a bibliography listing some of them might have been helpful. There is still plenty here, however, to make an outdoor experience safer and more fun. Stephanie Zvirin
