Using his studies of people in adverse situations (including P.O.W.'s, concentration camp survivors, and hostages) as well as personal experiences, Segal has created a short but powerful guide for anyone facing the crises of everyday life. Although the examples cited are exceptional, readers will be able to relate to them easily. Five strategiescommunication, taking control, finding a purpose, shedding guilt, and showing compassionare each given separate chapters and then combined in an epilogue that neatly summarizes the essence of the work. The book has no gimmicks, and makes no promises, but its advice is obtained effortlessly and there are few who wouldn't benefit from it. Highly recommended for all self-help collections. Robert L. Jaquay, William K. Sanford Town Lib., Loudonville, N.Y.
