This book is designed for college and university introductory music appreciation classes of one semester in length. the material covered is organized into fifteen chapters under three large divisions, but the chapters should not necessarily be covered in numerical sequence. Part I of the book, Foundaions for Listening, introduces the elements of music and musical instruments. Part II, Historical Perspectives, paints a picture of the musical heritage of Western culture with a rather broad brush.
