This entertaining work sketches the history and development of human notions of space and time within the contexts of various disciplines, including astronomy, physics, art, music, evolutionary biology, and sociology. The author demonstrates how space and time were "invented" in the consciousness of early life-forms and gradually evolved into the conceptions prevalent in contemporary civilization. It is novel to consider how life in adapting to its many environments has discovered properties of space/time. Indeed, the author contends that biological evolution has equipped living beings with a knowledge or innate mastery of space and time which is superior in certain ways to anything that can be learned from physics.
