PREFACE My aim in writing The Awakening Giant has been to increase the awareness of that great nation in the minds of youth. This work attempts to be both an introductory survey and a critical analysis of some of the major events and movements which shaped that country. It is also my object to stir controversy and debate by presenting the ideas of people of varying views. As the book covers the entire history of China, I have been forced, of necessity, to be highly selective in the choice of material. Being essentially a story of modern China, this book emphasizes the history of the last two centuries with particular stress on political developments. The interpretation of this later period is in large degree subjective, since much is left to future study and research. It is hoped that the book will encourage further reading and examination . . .
