Mary Lou Bevier first became interested in geology as an undergraduate student at the University of California at Santa Cruz. She attended The University of British Columbia for her M.Sc. degree. At the University of California at Santa Barbara, she pursued Ph.D. research in volcanic petrology and isotope geology, and developed a passion for teaching that began with instructing opportunities in field geology and optical mineralogy. After teaching geology at Western State College of Colorado for three years, and seven years of research in geochronology and isotope geology in cooperation with the Geological Survey of Canada, she moved to the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences at The University of British Columbia in 1992. There she teaches field geology and many other courses, and has received the EOS Incredible Instructor Award.
