About the Author:
Herbert G. Heneman III is the Dickson-Bascom Professor Emeritus in the Management and Human Resources Department, School of Business, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also serves as a senior researcher in the Wisconsin Center for Educational Research. Herb has been a visiting faculty member at the University of Washington and the University of Florida, and he was the University Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Ohio State University. His research is in the areas of staffing, performance management, compensation, and work motivation. He is currently investigating the design and effectiveness of teacher performance management and compensation systems. Herb is on the board of directors of the Society for Human Resource Management Foundation, and serves as its director of research. He is the senior author of three prior textbooks in human resource management. Herb is a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, the American Psychological Association, and the Academy of Management. He is also the recipient of the career achievement award from the Human Resources Division of the Academy of Management.

Timothy A. Judge is the Matherly-McKethan Eminent Scholar, Department of Management, Warrington College of Business, University of Florida. Prior to receiving his PhD at the University of Illinois, Tim was a manager for Kohl’s department stores. Tim has also served on the faculties of Cornell University and the University of Iowa. Tim’s teaching and research interests are in the areas of personality, leadership and influence behaviors, staffing, and job attitudes. He serves on the editorial review boards of Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. Tim is a former program chair for the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and past chair of the Human Resources Division of the Academy of Management. Tim is Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Society for the Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and in 1995 he received the Ernest J. McCormick Award for Distinguished Early Career Contributions from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. In 2001 he received the Cummings Scholar Award for the Academy of Management.

Vicky Smith, CHRP brings a strong practical influence to this textbook, gained through her extensive experience in all aspects of staffing. As chief operating officer of Express Professional Services (Canada) from 1994–2000, a global organization with over 500 franchises worldwide, Vicky has been instrumental in designing and leading the implementation of best practices in recruitment and selection for a highly successful organization.
As of 2000, Vicky has been president of Contact Human Resource Group, which provides consulting services to organizations in the business, government, and non-profit sectors from multi-nationals to SMEs (Small Medium Enterprises). Through her consulting experience, she has gained a “bigger picture” view of the strategic importance of effective staffing practices, thus bringing real-life stories to the book.
Vicky is a CHRP (Certified Human Resources Professional) and has taught the Recruitment and Selection course at Fanshawe College for five years. She sits on advisory committees at Fanshawe College to ensure that the Recruitment and Selection course covers the required professional capabilities as set out by the Canadian Council of Human Resources Associations. She is a longstanding member of the Human Resources Professionals of London and District and currently holds the position of past president. She wrote weekly articles for the London Free Press for five years, which focused on various human resources topics. Her educational qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts degree, Adult Education Diploma, CHRP, CPC (Certified Personnel Consultant) designations, and a Human Resources/Organizational Development Practitioner’s Practicum.

Russel J. Summers is an associate professor of management in the Sobey School of Business at Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Russ started teaching at Saint Mary’s after receiving his PhD from the University of Waterloo in 1987. He has taught undergraduate, MBA, and EMBA courses dealing with organizational behaviour, human resource management, research methods, staffing, training and development, management skills, and leadership. Currently, Russ is in his second term as the chairperson of the management department in the Sobey School of Business. Previously, he served as the director of the MBA program. He has also served as a member of the Saint Mary’s University Graduate Studies Research Committee, recently finished sitting as a member of the Saint Mary’s Board of Governors, and is an associate of the Leadership Centre of Excellence. Outside the classroom he has been involved in projects working with the CBC, CIBC, Nova Scotia Department of Business and Consumer Affairs, the Vietnamese Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Employment and Immigration Canada, Nova Scotia Power, and Emera. He has served as a reviewer for the Journal of Organizational Behavior, the Canadian Journal of Behavioural Sciences, the Journal of Applied Social Psychology, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. His research interests include sexual harassment, employment equity, leadership, cynicism, and organizational justice. He has presented his research at the Academy of Management conference, the Eastern Academy of Management conference, the Southern Academy of Management Conference, and the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada conference, and has published research reports in the Journal of Vocational Behavior, the Journal of Applied Social Psychology, Sex Roles, the proceedings of the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada, and the Journal of Social Psychology.
