Peter Hunn began collecting old outboards after receiving a 1928 Johnson for his tenth birthday, and since then he has acquired several hundred. Hunn is a outboard curator for the Thousand Islands Antique Boat Museum and is a regular contributor to Antique Outboarder magazine. The former owner of two upstate New York radio stations, he currently teaches communication studies at the State University of New York, Oswego.

The only complete guide to finding and identifying vintage outboard engines
Antique outboard motors have a mystique much like vintage cars, and they're much more affordable. Plus, once restored, they can be put to good use again, providing power for putt-putting around, fishing, waterskiing, or even racing.
The Old Outboard Book tells the story of the outboard motor, from the earliest days near the end of the nineteenth century through the dawn of the modern outboard era in the 1960s. Virtually every outboard motor ever built is here: Caille, Champion, Evinrude, Flambeau, Johnson, Martin, Mercury, Scott-Atwater, Waterwitch--the Big List chapter covers them all. The book also includes comprehensive oil-mix and spark plug charts for most old outboards.
The third edition of Peter Hunn's classic continues the story of the outboard motor, extending the coverage of U.S. and Canadian motors up to the mid-1970s and adding motors from Australia and Great Britain. In addition, the pricing and rarity guide and the complete model-year list have been updated.
If you're a buff of old outboard motors, you need this book.

Book Description Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Antique outboard motors have a mystique much like vintage cars, and the hobby of collecting and restoring them has a devoted following. The Old Outboard Book opens with the fascinating history of the outboard motor, which began in 1887 when the first patent was awarded for a self-contained steam engine. Peter Hunn then provides expert advice on where to find antique motors, how to identify them, and how to restore, maintain, and operate them. The heart of the book is Hunn's unique "Big List" chapter, which identifies and details every known American outboard ever made, from the beginning of the industry through the early 1960s. This is the only complete identification guide for antique outboards in print. Later sections include a pricing and rarity guide, a complete model-year list, and an appendix listing spark plug specifications and fuel-oil ratios for scores of old engines. This third edition, completely updated and bigger than ever, remains the only book of its kind. It includes 70 additional long-forgotten American outboards, as well as vintage motors from around the world, including France, the UK, Russia, Japan, and Scandinavia. Finally, the new edition, for the first time, covers engines built between 1960 and 1975 as well as pre-1960 models. Tells the story of the outboard motor, from the earliest days near the end of the nineteenth century through the dawn of the modern outboard era in the 1960s.
