Now in its ninth edition, this time-tested text continues to gives students a broad context in which to study the history, theories, and responses to crime and criminology, using a unique blend of both social science and legal research. The only criminology text to include legal case excerpts to demonstrate the role of the courts in the reformation of the criminal justice system, this book gives readers a solid understanding of the integral relationship between the law and theories of criminal behavior. Current topics such as hate crimes, "three strikes" sentencing, changes in Megan's Law, and the law and the Internet, are explored beyond the headlines, examining the implications of our governing theories and policies.

Review:

"This text is one of the best applied texts on the market. It has a fine blend of theory with real-life situations and circumstances, and the examples are exceptional and up-to- date."--Stan Hodges, Texas A&M University-Kingsville

"This book combines legal theory and practice with the study of criminology, which is rarely done, and rarely done well, as it is here. A student reading this textbook will get a full analysis of criminology's history, as well as discover the sociological, psychological, and economic factors that contribute to the study of criminology. Too many textbooks fail to explain criminology with this kind of depth and attention to detail, yet the book is not overbearing or off-putting--it is challenging without being difficult."--Cary Federman, Montclair State University
