A collection of 62 readings, arranged thematically, and support for student writers. The work includes three introductory chapters which provide clear instruction with a variety of student examples, showing how to be an active reader, how to write in response to reading and how to make the best use of writing-process principles. Chapters 4-12 offer a varied collection of essays, many by women and people from minority and ethnic backgrounds. Each essay is accompanied by extensive teaching apparatus, which provide a wide range of pre- and post-reading activities, including collaborative ones. The work also relates reading to writing by helping students apply features evident in the readings to their own writing. Writing opportunities provide a variety of length, difficulty and purpose. They also include both private and public writing, analytical and experimental writing, academic and non-academic topics. Each reading is followed by "workshops", "workshop activities" and idea generation, drafting, revising and editing activities. These focus on some aspect of rhetoric, grammar, usage or style evident in the reading and help students apply them in their own writing.
