This ten-chapter text is based on mystery stories - and to solve the mysteries, students have to show their knowledge of North American culture. In Parts 1 and 2 of each chapter, students read stories involving two American detectives. Reading and vocabulary skills are taught in conjunction with the story. In Part 3, there is a nonfiction reading on the chapter theme, with cross-cultural information followed by discussion questions. Part 4 of each chapter emphasizes writing skills, with a variety of exercises and interactive writing activities. Additional Highlights "Picture Clues" - a prereading/prediction exercise based on illustrations. "Can You Figure it Out?" - questions that focus on the cultural point of the chapter and bring students closer to solving the mystery. Discussion questions in Part 3 relate the chapter's fictional reading back to the students' lives and offer information that can help clarify puzzling cultural information about life in North America. The systematic writing section found in Part 4 of each chapter emphasizes key writing skills at the sentence and paragraph level.
