Popular and folk songs teach the four language skills enjoyably and effectively in this six book/six cassette series. Photos and bios of artists such as Gloria Estefan, Frank Sinatra, Bob Marley, Michael Jackson and The Beatles stimulate interest in young adult and adult learners, beginning through advanced levels. Speaking and writing activities extend the learning in each song. Complete lyrics and music on cassettes invite students to sing along. Designed for easy use in classroom or self-study.
Enthusiastic users write in:
"I cannot begin to count the number of students who have been able to improve their English by using SING IT!" Robert Nelson, English Instructor, San Francisco City College, CA
"It's such a sensible approach to learning English, and such fun. I guess that's the idea, right?" Susie Peters, Language Arts Educator, Saxtons River, VT
"I ordered the complete set and absolutely LOVE it! It is just exactly what I have been looking for for 14 years." Kristin Lems, ESOL Teacher, Evanston, IL
English students in Bangkok, Tokyo, Seoul, Bogot‡, and Mˇxico report that singing "I Just Called to Say I Love You" and other songs and doing the accompanying activities is making them much more at home in English.
The SING IT! series won second-place nationwide in the 1996 Excellence in English competition sponsored by the English-Speaking Union for "innovative and successful methods of teaching English as a second language."
I had an extremely hard time learning Spanish. That's why I have sympathy for people trying to learn English--which is an even crazier language to learn than Spanish. When I was in Mexico, I almost went nuts trying to get the pronunciation and the verb tenses, so I gave up and started listening to music. That's when I got it.
When I came back to the States in 1969, my students--teenagers and adults from 15 different countries--knew Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, so I used their songs to teach. It worked and I've been doing it ever since. For this new edition of Sing it! I had a great time choosing 81 songs and developing activities to go along with them. I love getting letters and e-mail from people in Burma, Bogota and Bangkok--and from Literacy Volunteers, correctional institutions and high schools in the USA--telling me that they love it, too.
