Cerenkov(or Cherenkov) radiation results when a charged particle (eg., an electron) travesl through an electrically polarizable medium at a speed which exceeds that which light would normally move in that same medium, resulting in displacement of the (traveling) atoms, and the disruption/polarization of the ambient electromagnetic field. Jelley's book introduces the concept, provides historical background (back to Cerenkov's original experiments), theoretically interprets the historical and ancillary data and discusses specific applications of and extensions to those theorems.
