ea. vol: 45p. notes. (Stories from the Religious World Series). CIP. Silver Burdett. 1987. PLB $9.96. Grade 4-7Collections of stories repre senting the beliefs or folklore of two religions. Stories from the Hindu World is the better of the two. Gavin has taken tales from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana and retold them in a simple and brief manner. At times this brevity leaves children with unanswered ques tions. Two of the stories are mere out lines of the above-mentioned sagas. The illustrations are bright, colorful representations of Indian art that are an important complement to the tales. While this will introduce children to Hindu mythology, a better choice is Madhur Jaffrey's Seasons of Splendor (Atheneum, 1985), which has a more in- depth retelling of a number of these sto ries, plus others. Stories from the Jew ish World is an unevenly written collection of tales from such diverse sources as the Bible, the Apocrypha, folklore, and recent history. Again the brevity of these stories at times works to their detriment. For example, impor tant facts are left out of the stories of Esther and Hanukah. In an attempt to cover a broad range of Jewish stories, several well-known folktales are in cluded, and a fable usually credited to Aesop. As a result, this book seems more a hodge-podge than a view of the Jewish world. Better choices are Greenfeld's Chanukah (Holt, 1976); McDermott's The Golem (Lippincott, 1975; o.p.); or McGovern's Too Much Noise (Houghton, 1967). For collec tions of Jewish folktales try those by Isaac Bashevis Singer.Elaine Lesh Morgan, Multnomah County Library, Portland, Oreg.
