Review:
1996 "I think COMC-II merits a 'rave' review...It is just a superb work in every respect. This new COMC-II is an absolute must for all libraries and ever a reasonable purchase for an individual research group of medium size. Any researcher in the field of organometallic chemsitry without ready access to it will be seriously handicapped. -- Journal of the American Chemical Society

1996 In 1982, the three editors-in-chief of the volumes under review here brought into existence the predecessor opus, Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry (COC). In this earlier series, the subject was covered from its headwaters in the early nineteenth century (Zeise's salt, diethylzinc, Grignard reagents) to the great flowing river it had become by the end of 1981. These volumes were of the highest quality in every way–comprehensive, accurate, and authoritative–and they were immensely useful.

Since 1982, organometallic chemistry has continued to growh, both in sheer volume and in importance, at an astonishing rate. Thus, the same three editors-in-chief decided that it would be appropriate to provide an updated coverage dealing with the years 1982-1994. And here it is, COC-II, in print before the end of 1995–a remarkable accomplishment in itself.

The strategy adopted was to regard the original work in nine volumes as a part of the entire corpus and to supplement the material therein with a review of all the new material that has appeared in the literature subsequently. This approach was adopted in preference to trying to revise and update the original work in a way that would produce a new one with stand alone character. I think the editors-in-chief made a wise and practical decision.... I think COC-II merits a "rave" review and that is what I am going to give it. It is just a superb work in every respect. Needless to say, I cannot assure the reader that it is without omissions throughout. All I can say is that wherever I have looked at the coverage of an area I know well, I have found it to be complete to the best of my recollection. Moreover, since there are lots of individual authors, each of whom is a specialist, the tone and emphasis are balanced and correct. In addition to the bare facts, one gets overviews, generalization, and perspective. The format and physical quality of these volumes is at the highest possible level. All important compounds are depicted with structural drawings that are clear and ready to hand. All statements and assertions are referenced to the original literature. The books themselves are handsomely produced on quality paper with rugged bindings....This new COC-II is an absolute must for all libraries and even...a reasonable purchase for an individual research group of medium size. Any researcher in the field of organometallic chemistry without ready access to it will be seriously handicapped. The editors-in-chief, the volume editors, and all of the authors have done a terrific job and deserve thanks and congratulations. -- F.A. Cotton, J. Am. Chem. Soc.

5 August 1996 The fruit of the editors' hard labour are remarkable: Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry II (COMC II) summarises progress in the field since 1982. There are 14 volumes: the first nine cover the main groups of the Periodic Table and the transition metals systematically, emphasising structural detail and giving an overview of reactivity. This follows the style of COMC I, of which COMC II is an update.

By adopting this approach, the wonders of this 'new world' of organometallic compounds are laid out before the reader.... Most of the advances made since 1982 have been in the application of this unnatural 'new world' to aid problems in the real world. This is reflected in COMC II by volumes 11 and 12, which review the uses of organometallic complexes as reagents and catalysts in organic synthesis... The advent of X-ray crystallography opened up the field of organometallic research and its development — a fact reflected in the decision to produce COMC II volume 13, which is an index of the crystallographically-defined in the other volumes. -- Chemistry & Industry

February 9, 1996 The chemistry of molecules with metal-carbon bonds has continued to expand rapidly since Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry (COMC-I) was published in 1982. Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry II (COMC II) updates the literature up to 1994. This new collection retains the previous overall structure, but certain sections have been expanded to reflect the changes in directly the field has taken in the past ten years. Thus the latest collection of epic proportions, consisting of 14 volumes.

The editors-in-chief, Edward W. Abel, F. Gordon A. Stone and Geoffrey Wilkinson, deserve much credit for enlisting the support of 16 volume editors responsible for recruiting the 170 contributing authors writing a total of 124 chapters. The volume editors have done a marvellous job in persuading so many of the world's leading organometallic chemists to contribute chapters. The authors constitute an international group divided approximately as follows: Europe (43 per cent), North America (46 per cent), Australia (5 per cent), and Asia (5 per cent).

Everyone concerned deserves enormous credit for this magnificent enterprise. All science libraries should have this collection. In this era of on-line databases, there is still a lasting need for a work of this type. -- The Times Higher Education Supplement

September 1996 Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry II provides a valuable and timely update to the earlier Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry (COC).... Over the past decade, research in organometallic chemistry has increased in popularity, with the volume of primary literature expanding at a very rapid pace. For this reason, review articles are becoming more important in order to allow a researcher to assimilate quickly the scope of a particular area of interest. In this regard, COC II achieves its goals admirably and is an essential addition to any science library. The editors are to be congratulated for bringing their epic task to fruition. -- G. Parkin, Choice

September 1996 In a practical sense COM-I and COM-II together consitute an absolutely splendid coverage of organometallic chemistry in all of its many important and exciting aspects up to 1994...for areas that are familiar to me, I can say that the coverage is extremely thorough and well organised...the complete COM-II is a mandatory library acquisition. The editors-in-chief and the individual contributors should feel very pleased with this landmark publication which systematises one of the most exciting areas of contemporary chemistry. -- William Kitching FRACI, Chemistry in Australia
