One nearly feels like telling “Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) for power systems, at last! . Perhaps, the more striking result of the present pioneering book is to tacitly vindicate a fundamental role even for power systems in that discipline currently going with the name of EMC. In fact, the latter was determined and progressively featured by the need of facing natural and man-made disturbances in radiocommunication and late proliferation and miniaturisation of sensitive electronic components. Meanwhile, a large amount of operators, involved in power systems as researchers, designers and technicians, are more and more demanding assistance of supplementary referential resources which, as for method of approach and scope, go any further the traditional EMC. This because ever since power quality issues call in cause EMC problems regarding transient and steady state disturbances, new categories of victims are coming out. These are connected to production processes which, likewise the electronic compartment, manifest significant susceptibility to power supply perturbations. On the other hand, investigating power plants, which are inherently complex and distributed systems, invariably stimulates a generally wished re-examination of the notion of compliance with the EMC Directive. In fact, the latter still appears rather concentrated on standalone devices than on their real performances as parts of a larger system.
Presented as a reasoned miscellany capable to embrace most EMC topics proper to power systems, this book is ultimately intended to fill the important need raised above. To this end, the volume brings together contributions from in-progress researches on lightning and geomagnetic-storm originated effects, ELF “radhazard , ESD, coupling among utility structures, ELF shielding, active and passive harmonic filtering. As the experienced reader will appreciate, the uniting factor of the proposed topics is the dominant attention to a large system interpreted, according to the circumstances, as a victim or a threat.
Prof. Francesco Lattarulo is with the Politecnico di Bari, Italy, where he is full professor in EMC for Electrical Engineering. He is involved in researches on High-Voltage Engineering and EMC and has been a member of the CEI (national) Technical Committee of EMC and of the AEI (national association) Special Group on EMC.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -A large amount of natural or artificially produced physical phenomena are exploited for practical applications, even though several of them give rise to unpleasant consequences. These ultimately manifest themselves under form of malfunction or definitive failure of components and systems, or environmental hazard. So far, manifold categories of inadvertent or deliberate sources have been discovered to simultaneously produce useful effects in some ways but adverse ones in others. In particular, responsible for the growing interest in the last decades for Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) has been the progressive miniaturisation and sensitivity of electronic components and circuits, often operating in close proximity to relatively powerful sources of electromagnetic interference. Potential authors of books on the subject-matter are fully aware of the fact that planning production of manageable handbooks capable to treat all the EMC case studies of practical and long-lasting interest could result in a questionable and difficult undertaking. Therefore, in addition to textbooks providing a thorough background on basic aspects, thus being well-tailored for students and those which want to get in contact with this discipline, the most can be made to jointly sustain a helpful and practicable publishing activity is to supply specialised monographs or miscellanies of selected topics. Such resources are preferentially addressed to post-graduate students, researchers and designers, often employed in the forefront of research or engaged for remodelling design paradigms. Hence, the prerequisite for such a class of publications should consist in arousing critical sense and promoting new ideas. This is the object of Electromagnetic Compatibility in Power Systems, which tries to rather discuss special subjects, or throw out suggestions for reformulating conventional approaches, than to appear as a reference text. A common motivation encouraged the contributors to bringing together a number of accounts of the research that they have undertaken over the late years: willing to fill the important need of covering EMC topics rather proper to transmission and distribution of electric power than, more usually, to Electronics and Telecommunication Systems.
