Anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent psychological problems in children and adolescents. This book summarizes research on the etiology, assessment, and treatment of these disorders. Coverage includes risk and vulnerability factors that may make some children more prone to the development of anxiety disorders, protective factors, and maintaining factors that may prevent children from overcoming anxiety once established. The interaction of vulnerability and protective factors is discussed as the factor determining an adaptive or a maladaptive outcome. The book concludes with a summary of assessment for these disorders and psychological and pharmacological treatment.

Peter Muris is a professor at the Institute of Psychology of Erasmus University in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He heads the department of clinical psychology at the university in addition to working as a child psychologist in an outpatient treatment center. Dr. Muris has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed journal articles, and conducts ongoing research with a focus on child psychopathology.
