The extensive appendices are a unique presentation of original material; many of the photographs have never been reproduced.
Authentic history is therefore coupled with stirring narrative as the author weaves into a living pattern the men, machines, and events of those early years of flying. This truthful presentation of a scarcely known, most gallant part of the First World War --- where RFC/RAF pilots claimed combat gains of nine to one over losses --- will be treasured by all who believe this to be the most absorbing period in aviation's history.
