Synopsis
Officer and Temporary Gentleman is a soldier's tale. It deals with the fateful years of 1914-18 which brought about the slaughter of millions of his contemporaries and also the destruction of the old order in Europe. Though only seventeen when the First World War began, he immediately set about the task of joining up. It proved an initially frustrating business, but eventually he was gazetted a second lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery (T). After training and serving in various parts of England, often bedevilled by ill-health, he was sent to the Western Front; first to Ypres Salient in Flanders, and thence into northern France where such now legendary names as Cambrai and St Quentin became part of his experience.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. True first British printing with original unclipped jacket (£5.95). Index. Illustrated. Jacket has faults - namely edge/shelf wear, numerous creases to front/back inner flaps, a little patchy browning/few small marks/spots of foxing to reverse (white side), a few small (largest approx 1cm) tears, patchy creasing/rubbing to edges, a few small marks, the odd spot of foxing, little pushing/rubbing to head/tail of spine, little pushing/bumping to corners (which has resulted in very small loss), patchy browning/rubbing/minor foxing to front/back inner flaps and is in only fair condition. Boards are near fine (having been well protected by the jacket) with a hint of pushing corners, the odd minor bump/rub to edges and minor pushing/rubbing to head/tail of spine. Pages are generally clean and the binding is tight. Pages are a little tanned. Previous owner's name, date and location in pen to front end-paper. Top edge of pages tanned with the odd small mark/minor foxing. Odd small marks/spots of foxing/small scratch to page edges and bottoms. Very occasional small mark/spot of foxing to pages.
