From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3-- The delightful story of a unique friendship between a dog, Osbert, and a rabbit, Lucy. After hearing their owners use the words "delicious," "rabbit," and "dinner," Osbert decides that he must prevent Lucy's apparent fate. The two decide to run away, but Osbert discovers that life in gardens with green leafy vegetables is more for rabbits than for domesticated dogs. His decision to return home is made easier by the fact that Lucy finds a mate and, it seems, will live happily ever after. This is a well-told story, beautifully illustrated. The delicately detailed drawings depict the setting of a peaceful English town. The theme of friendship between two completely different animals is well portrayed, as is Osbert's growing dilemma of how to survive outside the Good household. His ultimate discovery that the Goods never intended to eat their pet rabbit at all, but were in fact referring to the preparation of a pink jelly rabbit mold, leads Osbert not to regret his action, but rather to take pleasure in the fact that Lucy's leaving the household has resulted in her marriage to Henry Rabbit. --Karen P.
